A Tale of Three Business Deals: Yahoo eyes China, Oracle sights India, and Google suspends
online books plans.
|August 13, 2005
Yahoo!
Yahoo spreads its wings on China. With China's Internet market on the boom,
the next best thing
for the number 1 search engine (i.e., if Alexa is your rater) to do is merge with Alibaba.com's
search engine operations in China.
Alibaba engages in auction and trading, the biggest in China.
Yahoo's ante in acquiring a stake in Alibaba is to the tune of one billion dollars.
Oracle
On the other side of the fence, Oracle poured out almost the same amount as Yahoo
(it's $900 million by actual count)
in acquiring a controlling stake in i-flex Solutions.
I-Flex has a commanding hold in India's banking software sector.
Google
Google's move to digitize millions of books from leading libraries in the U.S. has been held in abeyance.
The $200 million project would enable web visitors to access millions of books on the Internet.
The delay could possibly
be the result of criticisms expressed by a number of groups. One criticism is the possibility of copyright violations to these books.
Resumption of Google's scanning of the copyrighted documents could possibly take place around Christmas.
